Be Ready When Disaster Strikes: The Importance of Emergency Preparedness

Emergencies are unpredictable. They strike without warning, and when they do, they disrupt our lives in ways we can’t always anticipate. While we can prepare for many things in life — from career changes to vacations — we often fail to prepare for emergencies that can completely alter the course of our daily existence in the blink of an eye.

We will explore why being ready for emergencies is crucial, drawing on recent events such as the 2025 Palisades and Eaton Fires in California, where residents found themselves scrambling to evacuate with little notice and even less time to gather essential belongings. We will also provide a comprehensive emergency checklist, ensuring that when disaster strikes, you have clarity on what to do, what to grab, and how to protect what matters most.

When Emergencies Don’t Give You Time to Prepare

During a crisis, every second counts. Whether it’s a wildfire, flood, earthquake, or even a medical emergency, the window of time to react can be incredibly short. We often hear that "it won’t happen to me" or "there’s plenty of time to prepare," but the harsh reality is that disasters don’t care about your schedule.

Two recent and devastating examples — the 2025 LA Fires — underscore how quickly an emergency can escalate, leaving little time to think about anything other than getting out.

The 2025 Palisades Fire: A Sudden Evacuation

The Palisades Fire ravaged the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. What began as a small brush fire soon grew into a monstrous, fast-moving inferno, quickly threatening homes and businesses. Within hours of evacuation orders being issued, residents found themselves scrambling to flee for their lives. With little to no warning, thousands were forced to evacuate, many of them without the opportunity to gather their most essential belongings.

"I heard the evacuation order, but by the time we packed up and started to leave, the fire was already dangerously close," said one resident. "I barely had time to grab my kids and pets, let alone pack anything else. It all happened so fast."

The fire spread at an alarming rate, fueled by dry conditions and gusty winds. In the chaos of evacuation, many residents left everything behind. For some, it was a matter of life and death; for others, it was about protecting the most important things, like family members and pets. Unfortunately, much of what was left behind — personal belongings, valuable documents, and irreplaceable memories — was either destroyed or severely damaged.

The 2025 Eaton Fire: A Rush to Escape

On Tuesday, January 7th, 2025 a fierce fire broke out near Altadena, engulfing the Eaton Canyon area. This blaze also spread rapidly, forcing residents to evacuate on short notice. Many people had to leave their homes in a panic, grabbing only what they could in the chaos, often leaving behind irreplaceable items like family heirlooms, photos, and important documents. The fire's ferocity caught many off guard, as they never anticipated such a disaster in their neighborhood. With little time to prepare, families fled to safety, unsure if they would ever return to their homes.

The aftermath was devastating for those who returned to the area. Several victims shared their heart-wrenching testimonies, describing how they never imagined their homes would be consumed by the flames. "I thought it would never happen to us," said one resident, staring at the charred remains of what was once their house. "We thought we had time to prepare, but by the time we realized how fast it was moving, it was too late." For others, the loss was even more personal. "I’ve lost everything. My life’s work, my memories—everything is gone," another homeowner lamented. As they surveyed the ruins, many were left to grapple with the overwhelming reality that they lost their homes along with important documents, medications, and other critical essentials that they needed to get back on their feet.

Much like the residents of the Palisades Fire, people in the Eaton Fire zone were forced to leave behind irreplaceable items. Photos, electronics, and personal mementos were sacrificed in the frantic race to escape the flames. The consequences were harrowing for those who didn’t have a plan or an emergency kit and checklist ready.

Both of these fires — the 2025 Palisades Fire and the 2025 Eaton Fire — serve as powerful reminders of how quickly an emergency can disrupt our lives. Without warning, we could face an evacuation; without preparation, we risk losing more than just property.

Why People Don’t Think Emergencies Will Happen to Them

For many, it’s hard to imagine an emergency will ever impact their lives. We live in a society where we often feel insulated from danger. Fires, floods, and other crises seem like they happen to other people, in other places. The truth is, though, that natural disasters, accidents, and unforeseen emergencies can strike anyone, anywhere, at any time. And when they do, it’s not the time to realize you should’ve been better prepared.

A common theme shared by those affected by events like the Palisades and Eaton Fires is regret. Many people wished they had prepared earlier, put together an emergency kit, or created an evacuation plan. It's only when faced with a disaster that the reality sets in — and by then, it may be too late.

The Importance of an Emergency Checklist

While it’s easy to push emergency preparedness to the back burner, the reality is that emergencies can unfold in the blink of an eye. That’s why having an emergency checklist is so important. It’s the difference between running out of your home in a panic, unsure of what to take, and knowing exactly what items to grab in the crucial moments.

An emergency checklist offers clarity. It keeps your focus on what matters — ensuring your loved ones are safe, your essential documents are accounted for, and you have the tools to survive for the first 72 hours after an emergency. By preparing ahead of time, you reduce the chaos and stress during an already overwhelming situation.

Top 10 Items to Include in Your Emergency Checklist

Here’s a comprehensive list of the top 10 items you should consider including in your emergency preparedness plan. When disaster strikes, these items will help you stay safe, connected, and prepared:

1. Identification and Important Documents

  • Passport, driver’s license, social security card

  • Insurance policies, medical records, and financial documents

  • Birth certificates and other legal documents

Why: In the aftermath of an emergency, access to these documents will be crucial for recovery, proving identity, and dealing with insurance claims. Keep these in a waterproof, fire-resistant folder or safe and in a place you can easily access quickly.

2. Emergency Contact List

  • A list of phone numbers for family, friends, and emergency services

  • Include both local and out-of-town contacts

Why: During an evacuation, your phone may not work, you may run out of battery or you may need to contact someone who lives farther away. Many of us don’t have phone numbers memorized but rely on our cell phone contacts. Having a printed list ensures you’re not scrambling for important contact information.

3. First Aid Kit

  • Basic medical supplies such as bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, allergy medications

  • A week’s supply of prescription medications, as well as any over-the-counter drugs you might need

Why: Injuries can happen, and having basic medical supplies can make a difference, especially if help is delayed. If you rely on daily medications, you won’t have time to refill prescriptions during an emergency. Make sure you have enough to last until you can get more.

4. Flashlight and Batteries

  • LED flashlight with extra batteries, or a rechargeable flashlight that can be powered by hand-crank

Why: Power outages are common during emergencies, and a reliable light source is essential for safety and visibility.

5. Cash

  • Cash in various denominations- especially smaller denominations.

Why: ATMs may be down, and credit card systems may not work. Having cash on hand ensures you can purchase necessities even in a crisis. With the rise in digital payments, companies may not have change for larger bills, so smaller denominations will come in handy as well.

6. Phone Charger (Portable Power Bank)

  • Keep a portable charger or power bank for your phone

Why: Your phone will likely be your lifeline for communication, navigation, and information during an emergency. A charged phone can also help you stay updated on evacuation orders and shelter locations.

7. Clothing and Footwear

  • A change of clothes and sturdy shoes (consider packing for each family member)

Why: In an emergency, you may be forced to walk long distances or face harsh weather conditions. Proper clothing and shoes can help you stay comfortable and avoid injury. With children, it is important to regularly update the sizing of clothes and most importantly shoes to ensure they fit when you need them most.

8. Water and Non-Perishable Food

  • At least three days' worth of water and non-perishable food (granola bars, canned goods, etc.)

Why: In an evacuation situation, food and water may not be readily available, and the first 72 hours are critical for survival.

9. Irreplaceable Heirlooms, Mementos and Photo Albums

  • Make a checklist of the most important personal items you need to gather in an emergency. This includes family heirlooms, treasured mementos as well as photos or albums that are not backed up digitally.

Why: If an emergency strikes, you may not be able to locate or remember your most treasured items in the midst of the chaos. We recommend securing these items in a sealed bin or box that is easily accessible in an emergency.

10. Pet Supplies

Why: Pets are part of the family, and in a crisis, you need to ensure they’re safe and have what they need for survival.

The Conclusion? Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late!

When a disaster like the recent California wildfires, floods, tornadoes, or earthquakes strikes, the difference between being ready and unprepared can mean the difference between life and loss.

By taking the time now to create an emergency checklist and gather essential supplies, you can help ensure that you’re not caught off guard when disaster strikes. You’ll have peace of mind knowing that, if the unthinkable happens, you’re ready to protect yourself and your loved ones.
