4 Vital Mistakes You Don't Want To Make In The Wilderness

When you're in a survival situation, the last thing you want to do is make a vital mistake. Unfortunately, many people are unaware that the choices they make (or don't make) in the wilderness can be a recipe for disaster.

That being said, here are a few mistakes to avoid making when you find yourself in a survival situation out in the wilderness.

  1. Not telling three people where you're going. One of the first mistakes you don't want to make before heading out into the wilderness or on a trip is not telling at least three people where you're going and when you will be back. When you tell three people about your whereabouts, you can be sure at least one of them will inform the authorities you're missing if you end up in an emergency situation.
  2. Not taking along survival gear. You never know when you may end up in a survival situation, which is why it's essential to bring a compact survival kit on your trips such as a survival kit backpack. Even the simplest survival tools such as rations, a rope, or pocket knife could help save your life.
  3. Not making a proper shelter. In the wilderness, the cold is one of your biggest enemies. Be sure to build a shelter out of sticks and underbrush if you can find it and then use as much grass and leaves as you can to create a bedding. When you have no insulation from the ground, the earth can suck the heat right out of you and cause hypothermia.
  4. Not having a signal plan. Before you head out in the event of a disaster or for a trip in the wilderness, it's essential that you learn how to make an emergency signal. Emergency signals can take the form of a signal fire, a flare, or a reflection off a mirror.

A survival bag such as a bug out bag can help you avoid many of these survival mistakes. A bug out bag is a compact survival kit that's designed to hold items you need to survive for 72 hours or longer when evacuating from a disaster.
