4 Tips to Prepare Yourself and Your Home for Hurricane Season

Before hurricane season hits, make sure you take care of these four things.

Get a tactical bug out bag

A tactical bug out bag is one of the best survival packs you can have to prepare yourself for any disaster. This premade bug out bag comes with everything you might need if you get caught in a hurricane. Inside the tactical bug out bag, you'll find food, water, a sleeping bag, a first aid kit, a flashlight, a multitool, a tent tube, and a power radio. You can keep this bag at home, in your car, or in your office so you have access to it no matter when the hurricane may hit.

Protect your home

Once you know you have the necessary supplies to get you through the storm, you have to prepare your house. First, you want to make sure your home is equipped with hurricane shutters. You then want to make sure any outdoor fixtures you have are put away or secured down. This means garbage cans, outdoor furniture, lawn supplies, etc. Finally, you want to full up your bathtub with water and caulk the drain. You will then have water to flush toilets and other emergency functions.

Call your insurance company

Before the hurricane comes, you want to get in contact with your insurance company. Your home insurance provider should be able to tell you what kind of damage is covered, and you can then make adjustments to your plan if necessary. You should also call your car insurance to do the same things.

Make a disaster plan for your loved ones

Finally, you want to make sure you get in contact with your family and make a plan. You should practice the role of every family member in the event of a disaster. You should also identify a central meeting place and an out-of-town contact so everyone can touch base in case you get separated. Make sure everyone knows how to get ahold of each other during a disaster.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the official Atlantic hurricane season is six months long. It lasts from June until November, with September being the most common month for hurricanes to hit the U.S. Make sure you are prepared for a storm to hit at any time because being caught unprepared could be detrimental to your survival.
